How to Shut Off Water to a Leaking Sprinkler Valve
When a sprinkler valve is leaking or stuck on, the first thing to do is stop the water — before it floods your yard or runs up your bill. Knowing where and how to shut it off is essential. Here's how to shut off the water to a leaking sprinkler valve.
Find your irrigation shutoff
Most irrigation systems have a dedicated shutoff valve on the line feeding the sprinklers, often located near the backflow preventer (the above-ground brass or PVC assembly), at the water meter, or where the irrigation line branches off the main. Turning this off stops water to the whole sprinkler system while leaving your house water on.
If you can't find it
If there's no obvious irrigation shutoff, you can use the home's main water shutoff (usually near the meter or where the line enters the house). This stops all water, house included, but it's a sure way to halt a bad leak immediately.
Isolating a single valve
Some valve manifolds have individual shutoffs or a flow-control on each valve. If yours does, you may be able to shut off just the leaking zone and keep the rest running. Otherwise, shut the irrigation supply and turn the controller to off so it can't energize the valve.
Then make the repair
With the water off, you can safely open and repair the valve — cleaning it, replacing the diaphragm, or swapping the valve. Turn the water back on slowly afterward to avoid a pressure surge. For help, our irrigation team is a call away.
