Irrigation for New Sod and Plantings
You've invested in a new lawn or landscape — now the irrigation has to get it established. New sod and plants have shallow roots and dry out fast, so their watering needs differ sharply from a mature yard. Here's how to irrigate new plantings in Southern California.
New sod: frequent and light at first
Fresh sod must stay consistently moist until its roots knit into the soil. Water lightly several times a day for the first week or two, keeping the surface and root zone damp (but not waterlogged). Then gradually reduce frequency and water more deeply to draw roots downward. Within a few weeks it transitions to a normal deep, infrequent schedule.
New plants and trees: deep and tapering
New shrubs, perennials, and trees need regular deep watering at the root ball, tapering off as roots spread:
- First weeks: water every one to three days to keep the root zone moist.
- Following months: taper toward weekly as plants establish.
- Trees: slow, deep soaks at the root ball, reducing frequency over the first year.
Use the right method
Drip irrigation is ideal for new plants — it delivers steady moisture to the roots. For new sod, even spray coverage matters; check for dry corners. A separate, temporary schedule for new areas avoids over- or under-watering the established yard.
