Choosing or replacing sprinkler heads is easier when you know the types and what each does best. Using the right head — and matching heads within a zone — is key to even watering. Here's a guide to sprinkler head types and when to replace them.

The main sprinkler head types

• Fixed spray heads: pop up and spray a set pattern over a short distance — ideal for small or narrow lawn areas.
• Rotor heads: rotate a stream back and forth to cover larger areas; they apply water more slowly, which helps on clay soil.
• Rotary nozzles: a hybrid that throws multiple rotating streams at a low rate — very efficient and great for medium areas.
• Bubblers: flood a small area at the base of trees and shrubs.
• Drip emitters: not a 'head,' but the most efficient choice for beds and plants.

Don't mix head types on one zone

Spray heads and rotors apply water at very different rates, so mixing them on one valve waters unevenly — some areas flood while others stay dry. Keep each zone to one head type for uniform coverage.

When to replace a head

• It's cracked, broken, or won't pop up or retract.
• The nozzle is worn, clogged, or misting.
• You're upgrading to high-efficiency rotary nozzles to save water.

Match the replacement
