Brown spots in an otherwise green lawn are one of the most common complaints we hear across the Inland Empire. The fix depends entirely on the cause, so the first step is diagnosis. Here is how to identify and repair the most common culprits.

Find the cause first

  • Uneven sprinkler coverage: brown spots in the same places every summer usually mean a clogged head or a gap in coverage.
  • Dog urine: round dead spots with a dark green ring around them.
  • Grubs: spongy turf that lifts like carpet, often with birds pecking at it.
  • Fungal disease: spreading patches, sometimes with a grayish ring, in humid or overwatered conditions.
  • Compaction or thatch: thin, struggling areas in high-traffic spots.

Fix the underlying problem

For sprinkler gaps, clean or replace heads and adjust coverage so every part of the lawn gets even water. For dog spots, water deeply to dilute and consider a designated potty area. Treat grubs with beneficial nematodes, and reduce watering to fight fungal disease. Aerate compacted, high-traffic areas to relieve stress.

Repair the bare patch

Once the cause is solved, rake out the dead grass, loosen the soil, and either reseed or patch with sod or plugs that match your existing grass. Keep the area moist until it establishes. For warm-season lawns like Bermuda, repairs take best during the warm growing season.

Prevent future spots

A healthy lawn resists most problems. Water deeply and infrequently, mow at the right height, feed seasonally, and run an irrigation check each spring to catch coverage issues before they brown out. Our maintenance team can keep lawns even and green year-round.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my lawn brown in the same spot every year?

That pattern almost always points to an irrigation coverage gap or a recurring grub problem in that area.

Will brown grass grow back?

If the roots are alive (common with heat dormancy or mild stress), yes. If the crown is dead, you will need to reseed or patch.
