Sprinkler System Won't Turn On? Troubleshooting Guide

You set the timer, but one zone (or the whole system) stays dry. A sprinkler zone that won't turn on has a handful of likely causes, and you can narrow it down step by step. Here's how to troubleshoot it.

Start at the controller

  • Power and display: confirm the controller has power and the screen is working — a tripped outlet or dead backup battery can stop everything.
  • Programming: check that the zone has a start time and run length, and the controller isn't in 'off' or 'rain delay' mode.
  • Manual test: manually start the problem zone to isolate whether it's a schedule issue or a hardware issue.

Check the water supply

Make sure the main irrigation valve and the backflow valves are fully open. If no zones run, a closed supply valve or backflow problem is a likely cause.

Suspect the valve or solenoid

If only one zone won't run, the issue is often that zone's valve. A faulty solenoid (the cylinder on the valve) or debris in the valve can prevent it from opening. Solenoids can be tested and replaced fairly easily.

Trace the wiring

A break or corroded connection in the low-voltage wire between the controller and that valve will stop it from activating. Damaged wires, bad splices, or critter chews are common. A multimeter helps locate the fault.

When to call a pro

Wiring and valve diagnostics can get tricky. If the basics check out and the zone still won't run, our irrigation team can quickly find the fault.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my sprinkler zone come on?

Common causes are a programming or controller issue, a closed supply valve, a faulty solenoid, or a wiring break to that zone.

How do I test a sprinkler solenoid?

You can manually open the valve by turning the solenoid, or test it with a multimeter for proper resistance — a pro can confirm and replace it.
