Xeriscaping is often misunderstood as 'zero-scaping' — a barren yard of rocks. In reality, it's a design approach that creates lush, beautiful, water-efficient landscapes perfectly suited to the Inland Empire. It rests on a handful of proven principles. Here they are.

The core xeriscape principles

  • Plan and design first: a thoughtful layout that matches plants to conditions is the foundation of water savings.
  • Improve the soil: compost helps our clay hold the right amount of moisture and drain properly.
  • Limit turf: reduce thirsty lawn to only where you truly use it.
  • Choose low-water plants: natives and Mediterranean species that thrive on little water.
  • Water efficiently: drip irrigation and smart controllers deliver water right to the roots.
  • Mulch generously: a thick layer holds moisture and blocks weeds.
  • Maintain appropriately: proper pruning and seasonal care keep the system efficient.

Group plants by water needs

A key xeriscape strategy is hydrozoning — clustering plants with similar water needs so each zone is watered just right. Thirsty plants near the patio, drought-tough plants on the far slopes, and never the two mixed on one valve.

Beautiful, not barren

Done well, a xeriscape is colorful and layered — flowering salvias, ornamental grasses, agaves, and seasonal blooms set among gravel and boulders. The result uses a fraction of a traditional yard's water while looking richer. Turf rebates can help fund the conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Is xeriscaping the same as zero-scaping?

No — xeriscaping is lush, planted, and colorful; it just uses water-wise plants and efficient irrigation. 'Zero-scape' (all rock) is a different, sparser look.

How much water does xeriscaping save?

A well-designed xeriscape commonly cuts landscape water use by half or more compared to a traditional lawn-heavy yard.
