Drip irrigation is the most efficient way to water beds, shrubs, and trees in Southern California — delivering water slowly and directly to the roots with very little waste. It's also one of the more DIY-friendly irrigation upgrades. Here's how to plan and install a drip system.

Why drip wins in our climate

Unlike spray sprinklers that lose water to evaporation, wind, and overspray, drip puts water right at the root zone. That means less waste, fewer weeds (since you're not watering bare soil), and healthier plants — ideal for the Inland Empire's heat and water restrictions.

The basic components

  • Connection and backflow protection at the water source.
  • Pressure regulator and filter: drip runs at low pressure and clogs easily, so both are essential.
  • Mainline tubing (usually 1/2-inch) routed through the beds.
  • Emitters or drip line placed at each plant.

Installation basics

Lay the mainline along your planting areas, then add emitters sized to each plant's needs (larger plants get more flow). Stake the tubing, flush the line before capping the ends, and cover with mulch to protect it and reduce evaporation further. Connect to a timer for hands-off watering.

Maintenance matters

Drip systems need occasional attention: flush the lines seasonally, check for clogged emitters (common with our hard water), and adjust as plants grow. A pressure regulator and filter prevent most problems. Our irrigation team can design and install a system for you.

Frequently asked questions

How much water does drip irrigation save?

Drip can be far more efficient than spray, cutting water use significantly by eliminating evaporation and overspray.

Do drip systems clog?

They can, especially with hard water — a filter, pressure regulator, and periodic flushing keep emitters flowing.
