A burst irrigation pipe can flood a yard, undermine hardscape, and send your water bill soaring — fast. Knowing how to respond quickly limits the damage. Here are the emergency steps for a broken irrigation line.

1. Shut off the water immediately

The first priority is stopping the flow. Turn off your irrigation system's main shutoff valve (often near the backflow preventer). If you can't find or operate it, shut off the home's main water supply. This stops the flooding and waste right away.

2. Turn off the controller

Set the irrigation controller to 'off' so it doesn't try to run zones while you work. This prevents repeated flooding during the repair.

3. Locate and expose the break

Find the wet, bubbling, or sunken area and carefully dig down to the damaged pipe. Common causes include freeze damage, root pressure, shifting soil, age, or an accidental shovel strike. Clear away soil so you have room to work.

4. Repair the pipe

For PVC, cut out the damaged section and splice in a new piece with couplings or a slip-fix coupling; for poly tubing, use the appropriate barbed or compression fittings. Let any glued joints cure before turning the water back on. Then restore water slowly to avoid another pressure surge.

When to call a pro

If the break is on the mainline, under hardscape, near tree roots, or you can't locate it, a professional has the tools to find and fix it fast. Our irrigation team handles urgent line repairs.
