A sprinkler zone that won't shut off is more than annoying — it can waste an enormous amount of water before you notice. The cause is almost always at the valve. Here's how to stop it and fix a stuck irrigation valve.

First, stop the water

If a zone won't turn off, shut off the irrigation main supply valve to stop the flow while you diagnose. Set the controller to off as well, in case it's sending a constant signal.

Why valves stick open

  • Debris in the valve: a bit of grit holds the diaphragm open — the most common cause.
  • A worn diaphragm: the rubber part that seals the valve has failed.
  • A stuck solenoid or one left in the manual-open position.
  • A controller fault sending continuous power to the zone.

Fixing it

Often the fix is to turn off the water, unscrew the top of the valve, and clean out any debris from the diaphragm and seat, then reassemble. If the diaphragm is worn or torn, replace it — a low-cost part. Make sure the solenoid is snug and in the closed position. If the controller is the culprit, the zone will keep running even with the valve manually closed.

Test your repair

Turn the water back on slowly and run the zone, confirming it shuts off completely when commanded. Watch for any seeping at the valve.

When to call a pro

If cleaning and a new diaphragm don't solve it, or the valve is hard to access, our irrigation team can rebuild or replace it.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my sprinklers turn off?

Usually debris or a worn diaphragm holding a valve open, a stuck solenoid, or a controller stuck sending power to the zone.

Can I fix a stuck valve myself?

Often yes — shutting off the water, cleaning the valve, and replacing the inexpensive diaphragm resolves most stuck-open valves.
