Hydrozoning: Grouping Plants by Water Need

One of the smartest principles in water-wise landscaping is hydrozoning — grouping plants with similar water needs together so each area can be watered efficiently. It's simple, it saves water, and it keeps every plant happier. Here's how it works.

The problem hydrozoning solves

Many yards mix thirsty and drought-tolerant plants on the same irrigation valve. Water enough for the thirsty plants and you drown the drought-tolerant ones (and waste water); water for the drought-tolerant plants and the thirsty ones suffer. Hydrozoning ends that conflict.

The basic water zones

  • High-water zone: lawn, vegetable gardens, and lush plants — placed near the house or patio where they're seen and used.
  • Moderate-water zone: many shrubs and perennials that want occasional deep watering.
  • Low-water zone: natives, succulents, and Mediterranean plants on the outer areas and slopes.

Design and irrigate by zone

Group plants of similar needs together, and put each zone on its own irrigation valve and schedule. Use drip for beds and reserve spray for actual lawn. This way each valve runs only as long as that group of plants needs — no overwatering, no underwatering.

The payoff

Hydrozoning cuts water use, improves plant health, and makes your whole system easier to manage. It pairs perfectly with a smart controller, which can run each zone to its specific need. Our water management team can design hydrozones for your yard.

Frequently asked questions

What is hydrozoning?

Grouping plants by their water needs and putting each group on its own irrigation zone so it can be watered efficiently.

Why does mixing plant types waste water?

When thirsty and drought-tolerant plants share a valve, you must overwater one to satisfy the other — wasting water and harming plants.
