Sod gives you an instant lawn — but whether it thrives or fails comes down to preparation and the first few weeks of care. In the Inland Empire's heat and clay soil, getting it right matters. Here's how to install and establish a new sod lawn.

Prep the soil first

Great sod starts below the surface. Remove the old lawn and weeds, then loosen and grade the soil. Work in compost to improve our heavy clay and improve drainage, and rake the area smooth and level, sloping gently away from the house. Skipping prep is the top reason new sod struggles.

Lay it right

  • Install sod the same day it's delivered — it can't sit on the pallet in the heat.
  • Lay strips in a brick-like staggered pattern, with edges tight against each other (no gaps or overlaps).
  • Roll the lawn to press roots into contact with the soil, then water immediately.

Water heavily at first

New sod needs frequent water to root in. Keep it consistently moist — often watering lightly two or three times a day for the first week or two, especially in warm weather. Then gradually reduce frequency and water more deeply to encourage roots to grow down.

Ease into normal care

Stay off the new lawn until it's rooted (a gentle tug should resist after a couple of weeks). Wait to mow until it's about a third taller than its mowing height, and hold off on heavy fertilizing for several weeks. Choose a warm-season sod like Bermuda for the best heat tolerance here.

Frequently asked questions

How long until new sod roots in?

Most sod roots enough to handle light foot traffic and mowing within two to three weeks in warm weather.

When is the best time to lay sod in SoCal?

Spring and fall are ideal — warm enough to root quickly but not in the worst summer heat.
