Drip Irrigation vs. Spray Sprinklers: Which Is Better?
When watering your landscape, the two main options are traditional spray sprinklers and drip irrigation. Each has its place, and the right choice depends on what you're watering. Here's how they compare for Southern California yards.
Spray sprinklers
Spray and rotor heads throw water over an area, making them the standard choice for lawns and large turf areas. They cover ground quickly but lose water to evaporation, wind drift, and overspray onto pavement — and they water everything, including weeds and bare soil.
- Best for: lawns and dense ground cover.
- Downside: less efficient; prone to runoff on slopes and clay.
Drip irrigation
Drip delivers water slowly and directly to plant roots through tubing and emitters. It's far more efficient, virtually eliminating evaporation and overspray, and keeps foliage dry (reducing disease).
- Best for: beds, shrubs, trees, gardens, and slopes.
- Downside: not suited to lawns; emitters can clog without a filter.
Which should you choose?
For most SoCal yards, the answer is both — spray (or better, no lawn) for turf areas, and drip for everything else. Converting beds from spray to drip is one of the highest-impact water-saving upgrades you can make, and it qualifies for some rebate programs.
The efficiency bottom line
If cutting your water bill is a priority, shift as much of your yard as possible to drip and reserve spray for genuine lawn. Our water management team can plan the conversion.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use drip irrigation for my lawn?
Subsurface drip exists for lawns, but standard drip isn't suited to turf — spray or rotors are typical for grass, while drip excels everywhere else.
Is drip really worth converting to?
For beds and shrubs, yes — the water savings and healthier plants usually make conversion well worth it.
