How to Water Clay Soil: The Cycle-and-Soak Method

If water runs off your lawn and down the gutter every time the sprinklers come on, you're not alone — and you're wasting water. The culprit is the Inland Empire's heavy clay soil, which absorbs water slowly. The fix is a simple technique called cycle-and-soak.

Why clay soil causes runoff

Clay's tiny, tightly packed particles can only absorb water so fast. When a sprinkler runs for one long stretch, the soil quickly saturates at the surface and the rest runs off before it can soak in. You end up watering the sidewalk, not the roots.

How cycle-and-soak works

Instead of one long runtime, split it into two or three shorter cycles with a soak period between them. For example, rather than 15 minutes straight, run 5 minutes, wait 20–30 minutes for it to absorb, then run again. Each cycle wets the surface; each soak lets it sink in deeper. The result is deep watering with no runoff.

Setting it up

Most modern controllers have a built-in 'cycle and soak' or you can program multiple short start times per zone. Smart controllers handle it automatically. Pair it with early-morning watering for maximum efficiency.

The payoff

  • No wasted runoff — lower water bills.
  • Deeper moisture that encourages drought-tolerant roots.
  • Healthier lawn and plants that handle heat better.

Cycle-and-soak is one of the easiest, highest-impact changes for any Inland Empire yard. Our irrigation team can program it for you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop my sprinklers from causing runoff?

Use cycle-and-soak — several short watering cycles with soak time between — so clay soil can absorb the water instead of shedding it.

How long should each cycle be?

Short enough to avoid runoff (often a few minutes), repeated two or three times with a soak period between. Watch your yard and adjust.
