After a winter of sitting idle, your irrigation system needs a check-up before the watering season ramps up. Catching problems in spring prevents dead spots, wasted water, and emergency repairs during the summer heat. Here's a spring sprinkler start-up checklist for the Inland Empire.

1. Turn the water on slowly

Open the main irrigation valve gradually. A sudden surge can cause water hammer that damages pipes and heads. Let the lines fill before running any zones.

2. Run each zone and watch closely

Cycle through every zone one at a time and look for:

  • Broken, cracked, or missing heads.
  • Heads that don't pop up or won't retract.
  • Misting (high pressure) or weak spray (low pressure or a leak).
  • Overspray onto sidewalks, walls, or the street.
  • Soggy spots that signal an underground leak.

3. Clean and adjust

Clear clogged nozzles and filters, straighten tilted heads, and adjust spray patterns so water lands on plants, not pavement. Flush drip lines and check emitters for clogs from winter sediment.

4. Reprogram the controller

Replace the controller's backup battery, update the clock if needed, and set a spring schedule — or confirm your smart controller is online and adjusting. Don't just resume last summer's runtimes.

5. Check the backflow preventer

Inspect for leaks or damage, and remember many areas require annual backflow testing. Address any issues before heavy watering begins. Our irrigation team can handle a full spring tune-up.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start my sprinklers in spring?

As temperatures warm and the rainy season ends — typically early spring in the Inland Empire. Do a full check before relying on the system.

Why turn the water on slowly in spring?

A sudden surge causes water hammer that can crack pipes and blow out heads. Filling the lines gradually prevents that damage.
