Few plants suit Southern California like succulents. They store their own water, love our sun, and come in an incredible range of shapes and colors — making them perfect for low-water, high-impact gardens. Here is how to design and care for a succulent garden in the Inland Empire.

Best succulents for SoCal gardens

  • Agave: bold architectural rosettes that anchor a bed; choose smaller varieties near paths to avoid spines.
  • Aloe: winter-blooming spikes of orange and red that hummingbirds adore.
  • Echeveria: colorful rosettes in blue, pink, and purple, ideal for borders and containers.
  • Sedum and senecio: spreading ground-cover types that fill gaps and trail over walls.
  • Red yucca and ocotillo: tall accents that add height and movement.

Design for contrast and drainage

Succulent gardens look best with contrast — pair spiky agaves with rounded echeverias and trailing sedums, and use gravel or boulders to set them off. Above all, succulents need fast drainage. In our clay soil, plant on mounds or amend heavily with pumice and decomposed granite so roots never sit in water.

Care is refreshingly simple

Once established, most succulents need water only every couple of weeks in summer and rarely in winter. Overwatering is the main way to kill them. They appreciate full sun, though some softer types prefer afternoon shade in the hottest inland areas. Fertilize lightly, if at all.

Frequently asked questions

Do succulents survive Inland Empire winters?

Most do, but a few tender types can be damaged by frost. Choose cold-hardy varieties or protect tender ones on rare freezing nights.

Why are my succulents rotting?

Almost always overwatering or poor drainage. Cut back water and amend the soil with pumice or gravel.
