Rose Care Tips for Southern California Gardens
Roses reward Southern California gardeners with months of bloom, thanks to our long, sunny growing season. They are not as fussy as their reputation suggests — give them sun, water, and a little seasonal care, and they will thrive across the Inland Empire. Here is how.
Site and planting
Roses need at least six hours of direct sun and good air circulation to prevent disease. Plant in well-draining soil amended with compost; in clay, raise the bed or mound the soil. Space plants so air moves freely between them — crowding invites mildew and rust.
Watering and feeding
Water deeply at the base two to three times a week in summer, keeping the foliage dry to avoid fungal disease. Drip irrigation is ideal. Roses are hungry plants: feed every four to six weeks during the growing season with a balanced rose fertilizer, stopping in fall as they prepare for dormancy.
Pruning for more blooms
The main pruning happens in January, when roses are dormant — cut back by about a third, remove dead and crossing canes, and open up the center. Throughout the season, deadhead spent blooms just above a five-leaflet leaf to encourage continuous flowering.
Manage common pests
- Aphids: blast them off with water or release ladybugs — rarely need chemicals.
- Powdery mildew and rust: improve air flow, water at the base, and remove affected leaves.
- Spider mites: common in summer heat; hose down the undersides of leaves regularly.
Frequently asked questions
When do I prune roses in Southern California?
January is the standard time, while plants are dormant. Light shaping and deadheading continue through the blooming season.
Why aren't my roses blooming?
Usually too little sun, not enough food, or skipped deadheading. Six-plus hours of sun and regular feeding make the biggest difference.
