Planting without a plan

Buying plants on impulse and finding spots later leads to a disjointed yard and plants placed where they can't thrive. Start with a plan that accounts for sun, mature plant size, and how you'll use each area. A little design up front saves expensive do-overs.

Ignoring mature size

That cute one-gallon shrub may become a six-foot monster crowding your walkway. Spacing plants for their mature size — not their nursery size — prevents overcrowding, constant pruning, and plants that outgrow their space.

Overwatering and poor irrigation

• Watering daily and shallowly, creating weak, thirsty plants.
• Using spray heads on slopes and in beds where drip would save water.
• Never adjusting the controller for the seasons.

Most yards are dramatically overwatered. Deep, infrequent watering and a smart controller fix it.

Wrong plant, wrong place

Putting sun-lovers in shade, thirsty plants next to drought-tolerant ones, or plants that hate our clay in unamended soil sets you up to fail. Match plants to your conditions and group them by water needs (hydrozoning) so irrigation is efficient.

Forgetting drainage and soil

Skipping soil prep and drainage is the hidden cause of many plant deaths in our heavy clay. Amend the soil, plant on mounds where needed, and solve drainage before you plant, not after.
